Mommie Dearest is a 2008 American biographicaldrama film directed by Danny Boyle. The film acts as a remake/redoing of the 1981 film of the same name which is based on the autobiography of the same name. Starring Jessica Lange, Abigail Breslin and Rooney Mara, the film, based on Christina Crawford's Mommie Dearest, was adapted for the screen by Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, with uncredited script doctoring by Ryan Murphy.
The movie was distributed by New Line Cinema, and produced by Springbok Productions, Morgan Creek Entertainment, Beacon Pictures and Laura Ziskin. Executive producers were Christina Crawford, Robert Shaye, Michael Lynne, Armyan Bernstein, James G. Robinson, David C. Robinson, Jerry Weintraub and Michael De Luca. Unlike the 1981 original film, this version was intended to be a telling of Christina's claims of abuse from her adoptive mother, Joan Crawford, entirely from Christina's point of view.
The movie was a massive financial and critical success, with critics universally praising the film and considering it superior to the original, and Lange's performance as Crawford was singled out as the best part. The movie also came during the same time and year that Boyle's film Slumdog Millionaire was released, establishing Boyle as an ascendant director. The movie was also so noteworthy that Jessica Lange later reprised her role as Joan Crawford in the TV series Feud.
