Autumn Deer Publishing is the book publishing division of Springbok Productions, known for publishing nonfiction and fiction book titles of various genres, magazines and comics. Its first book was the memoir of actress Anne Heche in 2001. From 2001 to 2019, it was fully owned by Springbok, and was admittedly the slowest-growing division of the company. In 2019, Springbok announced that it would sell off half of its stake in the company to HarperCollins, reestablishing Autumn Deer Publishing as a joint venture.

History[]

Autumn Deer Press was announced as being formed in the summer of 2001, with an intent to focus on publishing nonfiction and fiction titles. To score a coup and hit the ground running, they announced their first title was End of My Rope: Stories of a Hollywood Life, the memoir of actress Anne Heche, in order to help explain herself after an infamous mental episode as well as the fallout of the end of her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. The book was published on September 4, and attracted brisk sales, mainly for Heche's allegations of sexual abuse by her father, and leading to the end of relations with her mother Nancy.

Autumn Deer spread into magazine publication in 2010 with purchasing and reviving the investigative magazine New West and the political/celebrity magazine George, buying the UK music magazine Vive Le Rock, and starting its own in-house animation magazine, Animation Domination.

Since 2014, Autumn Deer Publishing has included Dark Horse Comics as an imprint, after Springbok purchased the company. Its comic and manga titles added considerable clout to the division as well as moving Dark Horse Entertainment to be a division among Springbok itself to build a cinematic universe out of the IPs.

Autumn Deer Publishing attracted billions of dollars in profits, but never got beyond the single billions-range, as it became the slowest growing division of Springbok, compared to the film, television, animation, music, record label and video game divisions.

In 2019, to help shore up the division and bring it further along, Springbok announced that it would sell half of Autumn Deer to book publisher HarperCollins, a division of News Corporation, and refashion the imprint as a joint venture between the two companies.
